Population Zero

Why am I fascinated with the Apocalypse? Why do I get eerily interested at the prospect of all of humanity being wiped out? Why am I fascinated with fiction about zombies, pandemics, nuclear fallout... anything where the world has been reduced to a barely functioning husk of its bustling former self?

I don't know... Maybe I'm disturbed...

But anyway, I've been watching this show called "Life After People" which some of you may have heard of. It's on the History Channel (and also, seasons 1 and 2 stream instantly on Netflix, which is where I've been watching) and is infinitely interesting to someone like me who has a sick brain and apparently wants to see the human race decimated.

As the opening credits say (and I'm paraphrasing), it's the story not of how we might be wiped out, but the story of the world we leave behind.

Here's a taste...

I picked that clip almost at random off of YouTube to give all of you who might be interested a taste, but the series doesn't just explore what would happen to buildings if there were no people around. It uses sophisticated computer animation, talks to experts, scientists, and authors and examines places already devoid of humans to show us animals and how they'd adapt and change behaviors, how famous landmarks would be destroyed or stand the test of time, how national treasures fare without human maintenance, and all manner of other things chugging along (or not) after all humans are gone.

I began watching this show as a bit of research for a piece of fiction I've had in my head for a along time and maybe someday, I'll get the drive and write that thing. For now, I can laze around in my PJ's and watch the world collapse... and be educated in the process.

Winemaking TOOLs

Hey guys,

I know, I know...

It's been a long time...

I really wanna try and get back into a regular blogging thing here (along with some regular creation of something... comic, prose, whatever). I guess what I've always done best here in this particualar space of the interwebs is tell you what I'm getting into right now.

I cranked on some TOOL, some A Perfect Circle, and some Pusicfer last night for the first time in a while. Anyone who knows a little bit about music knows the common denominator here...

Maynard Keenan...

When I heard he was going to be giving an interview on "Last Call with Carson Daly", I became excited. It had probably been at least 10 years since I'd heard any kind of current interview with the man. Apparently, he's into making wine now and still carrying on with all of the bands listed above in some capacity.

The following is the reason the words "kinda tried to fuck my Lazy Boy" were winding their way around my house at about four o' clock this morning... Check this out and then check out some TOOL, A Perfect Circle, or Puscifer (you know... in case you've been living in a cave for almost 20 years and have never heard any of these bands...)

Blogger-droid

Hey guys,

With finally getting an Android phone, I thought I'd get an app for blogging. Consider this my test run for doing so.

I've gotta say that technology is amazing me these days. I can sit here on my couch or anywhere in the world and type to you or anyone who happens on this blog from a device whose begginings were a bulky box confined to an automobile. I can follow my favorite sports teams, listen to pretty much any radio station I'd ever care to, access any web page, play games, look up words in a dictionary, map any journey, and so much more all from a device that I carry around in my pocket. I know it sounds corny and outdated, but think of how far technology has come. Think of what we'll be doing on these devices in the next 20 years...

Ah well, guys... Just a few thoughts...

Maybe this app will help me blog more. If nothing else, it's had its part in my recent amazement.

Be well, guys...

Peace...

One Way

When a person can wow me with the comic books AND music they put out, well that's something.

At 33 years of age (about 6 months older than me), Gerard Way has achieved just about everything that I've ever wanted to do with my creative life. His band My Chemical Romance has two certified platinum albums here in the U.S. and Way's comic book series The Umbrella Academy is an Eisner and Harvey award winner.

Having not long ago read the first volume of The Umbrella Academy and having been pumping the Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and The Black Parade albums by My Chemical Romance for a while now, I've gotten a whole new respect for the man. And you guys know how I love giving props to those out there being creative. Especially when it's with two things that I hold so close to my heart.

In this first post I'll concentrate on giving you some snippets from the second MCR album (the one that I got into first), Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and some things from The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite (the first volume of Mr. Way's comic).

First, as I'm known to do, the music videos from the singles from Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge with titles ABOVE the songs.

Here goes:

I'm Not Okay (I Promise)

The Ghost of You

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f0Pkfp0xqg&feature=related

I couldn't find an embeddable (is that a word?) video for "The Ghost of You" so there's the link to YouTube. It's really a cool video and a song that's a bit different from their others on that album. Copy, paste, and watch if you'd like. I'd recommend it.

And as for those of you who may like I used to be before I really took a good listen to this band and label them as "emo", I beg you to take another listen. Way himself has been quoted as saying, "I think emo is fucking garbage, it's bullshit. I think there's bands that unfortunately [we] get lumped in with that are considered emo and by default that starts to make us emo.” and, "I think emo's a pile of shit.”

The music on "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" does have a punk edge, as does some "emo" music, but the content, concept, and smarts of the record take it way beyond any label. And who fucking needs any labels, anyway? It's rock music. Drink it up.

And now some artwork/pages from The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite. Gerard Way didn't draw the pictures, he wrote the script. But still... Just a taste for you...

So anyway... Hopefully you guys have gotten some enjoyment out of this or taken a look at something you may not have before. I'll return with another post about Gerard Way. I've been listening to "The Black Parade" nearly nonstop for a while now and am planning to read "The Umbrella Academy: Dallas" soon.

I'll give you some more thoughts on those things soon.

Peace...

Soundblack

Hey guys,

Any of you who follow me and my posts on Twitter and Facebook have seen me post about a writer named Warren Ellis. You'll also know that lately I borderline worship the guy.

Though I haven't read it yet, I glanced an interesting little thing in the back of his only prose novel (entitled "Crooked Little Vein"). He'd made a list of songs that inspired the book and called it something like "soundtrack behind the book".

Now, any of you longtime followers will also know that I've been working on my first comic book off and on for some time now. I've finally reworked the story to where I think I want it and have hit a good stride. It's entitled "BLACK".

With imitation being the sincerest form of flattery and many random firings going off in my brain tonight, I think I've found the first song that I'd enter into the soundtrack for "BLACK", were there to be one.

See below...

Just a fun little thing I thought of that I might keep doing. I thought I'd share with those of you who might be interested.

I know it's been a while since the last post on "The Llog" and I'm gonna try and get better at that, too.

Hope to post to you all again here, on Twitter, and on Facebook soon. Be well, and...

Peace...

"Waiting and fading and floating away..."

Hey guys,

The night before I left for London, I decided I needed to make a late night run to Wal-Mart to grab some last minute supplies for the trip. Clicking on the radio, I heard a snippet of a song that sounded really cool. I really wanted to find out what it was but didn't get the chance to before I left the car.

Sitting down in the Hard Rock Cafe in London, the video for the same song came on the TV shortly after we sat to eat. Again, I wasn't able to catch who it was, but I took this (like I do) as a sign.

After coming back and doing a little research, I discovered that the song was called "Panic Switch" and that it was by a band called Silversun Pickups.

When I heard the song, I latched onto it because, though being a song in the rock vein, it had almost a trancy electronica sound to it. It sounded like it was from the post-post-grunge era if ever such a genre was to exist.

Doing a bit more research on the band, I found they'd been compared to such acts as Smashing Pumpkins and that they listed some grunge era bands as influences.

I got on iTunes and downloaded the album "Swoon" which contains the song "Panic Switch". I've listened to it all now and I've gotta say, it's the first album that's really blown me away on first listen in a long, long time.

Here are the videos for the singles thus far off of "Swoon" in the order they were released, with the titles ABOVE the songs.

The Royal We

And now here's an interview where a couple members of the band talk a bit about the new record and tell some funny stories. The end of this interview cracks me up! ("And Ernie comes in, what a dick..." Hilarious! Watch for it...)

So that's my bit about the band Silversun Pickups and my blog entry for the day, guys. Hope you enjoyed the music and info.

Peace...
